Overview

Our 2-day private trip is the shortest version of a merzouga desert tour from Ouarzazate — joined at Ouarzazate — and a must-do morocco desert tour that takes you through the Dadès Valley and on to the Erg Chebbi dunes, with a camel ride and time to enjoy both sunset and sunrise from a Berber camp. If you have more time, see our 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech for a less hurried itinerary.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Ouarzazate Dades Merzouga Desert Excursion

Begin your private Sahara desert tour from Ouarzazate with Local Morocco Tours, your dedicated specialist for the Erg Chebbi dunes. After hotel pickup, we follow the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs through Skoura and on to the Dades Valley. We then visit the Todra Gorges before continuing via Tinghir and Erfoud to Merzouga. From the edge of the dunes a 90-minute camel ride takes you into the heart of the Erg Chebbi to a traditional Berber camp. You enjoy the sunset and, after dinner, listen to Berber drums and music around the fire. Overnight in the desert camp.

Day 2

Merzouga Rissani Agdz Draa Valley Ouarzazate

Today you watch the Sahara sunrise from the dunes, then ride the camels back to Merzouga for breakfast. After breakfast we drive to Ouarzazate, passing small Berber villages such as Alnif, Tazarine and N'kob along the way. We drop you off at your hotel in Ouarzazate. At Local Morocco Tours, we will do everything we can to tailor a private Morocco tour that is perfect for you, your family, your friends or your group.

Route map

Departing from Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate is the closest city to both Ait Benhaddou and the Sahara — often called the ‘Gateway to the Desert.’ The drive from Ouarzazate to Merzouga is roughly four hours east along the N10 through the Skoura oasis, the Dades and Todra gorges, and Erfoud — about half the journey time from Marrakech. This makes Ouarzazate the most efficient base for a short Sahara trip if you’re already in the south.

A two-day Ouarzazate-to-Merzouga tour departs early on Day 1, giving you time to stop at the Skoura palm grove (kasbahs dating to the 16th century) and walk through the Todra Gorge narrows before arriving at Erg Chebbi for the sunset camel trek. One night in a private desert camp, then Day 2 offers a dawn walk in the dunes before the return drive to Ouarzazate via the N10 or a southern variation through Rissani and the Tafilalt oasis.

Ouarzazate itself has its own distinct appeal: the Kasbah Taourirt, the Atlas Film Studios (Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones), and the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou ksar 30km to the north-west. If you’re staying in Ouarzazate and want a focused Sahara experience without a long drive, this is the most direct option. Request a quote for your dates.
